BACKGROUND: The San Juan Islands are situated due north of Puget Sound. The main islands are San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, Shaw and Blakely Islands all serviced by Washington State Ferries. Puget Sound North map covers waters from the Canadian border to the north south to the southern end of Whidbey Island and west to Dungeness Spit in Juan de Fuci Strait. The San Juan Islands are much different and more rugged than it's counterpart to the south. The topography of the islands varies from the peaks on Orcas to the rolling flatlands of Whidbey Island. There is something for everyone and every skill levels. These islands provide spectacular whale watching opportunities with some of the best being off the west side of San Juan Island. There are also many protected harbors and passageways with calm waters versus the more open waters of Sucia and Prevost Islands to the north.

ACCESS; Access to the northern waters of Puget Sound or the main San Juan Islands (Lopez, Orcas, San Juan Island and Shaw) is available via Washington State Ferry from Anacortes Washington and Sidney, British Columbia only. In the south both Whidbey and Camano Islands are connected to the mainland with bridges. Whidbey Island also has two ferry connections from Mukilteo (east coast) and Port Townsend (west coast).
