BACKGROUND: This map covers a portion of the Colorado River from Lake Meade in the north to Lake Mohave in the south. The Black Canyon is situated below the Hoover Dam, the approximately 15 miles in length south to Willows Beach a popular marina and launch site. This portion of the Colorado River is considered one of the most popular paddling destinations in the southwest United States. The canyon is known of its spectacular steep canyon walls, abundant wildlife with mountain sheep often seen on the canyon walls, numerous types of cacti. Aside from the flora and fauna Black Canyon is primarily known for the numerous thermal hot springs found in the adjacent canyons of this short section of river with the most popular being the Arizona Beach Hotsprings a short distance down from the Hoover Dam. The waters of the Colorado River downstream of Lake Meade has slow moving current providing easy to navigation upstream or downstream.
ACCESS: Lake Meade north of the Black Canyon has several campgrounds around the lake providing ample access to the lake. Below the Hoover Dam on the Nevada side is a popular access by permit only available through many of the local outfitters in the area and park office. Further downstream is Willows Marina a most popular launch site providing excellent access to both up and downstream. Cottonwood Cove Marina south of Willows Marina on Lake Mohave is the next launch site with full marine facilities and a campground.
