Nootka Sound is considered historically significant, in 1778 Captain James Cook first landed on the west coast of what is now British Columbia, proclaiming this land for Britain in the vicinity of Bligh Island. A plaque commemorates this event in Resolution Cove where it is thought Cook first landed. Friendly Cove one of the more popular destinations for visitors, and the ancestral home of the Mowachahts. Tours are available to people who wish to come ashore and explore the village. The islands of the Spanish Pilot Group offer excellent protection from the daily winds, and provide some excellent exploration. The waters off Discovery Point offer a variety of marine life to view. To the south, Escalante Rocks provide suitable habitat for sea lions, whereas both killer and gray whales can be spotted further offshore at varying times of the year.
