Hakai Passage Hakai Passage is a remote and popular destination enjoyed by fishermen, boaters and sea kayakers. Beachcombing opportunities are endless, with miles of sandy beaches along the west coast of Calvert Island. The southern portions of Rivers Inlet are included, with many fishing lodges situated near; "The Wall" considered the most productive fishing site in Rivers Inlet. Hakai, shrouded in native tradition dating back over 10,000 years, with places such as Hakai (wide passage), Namu(whirlwind) and Koeye(sitting on water) named by the Heiltsuk people. June to September all five salmon species pass through Hakai Passage providing excellent fishing. Smith Sound to the south of Rivers Inlet is another interesting area to explore, most notably Open Bight, with its sandy beaches and spectacular views, ideally situated as a stop over when rounding Cape Caution.
